1+1+1

So I mentioned in my last post that I am trying to make the most of my summer. Since I teach and technically "don't have to work" (at least not my real, paying job) during the summer, and since this is the first summer since I graduated high school (can that really be SIX years ago?!) that I have not been in summer school and working, too, I have more time on my hands than I have had, well, since ever! Of course, like everyone does, I have a list a mile long of have-to's and want-to's to accomplish this summer, but God has been impressing upon my heart for months now the conviction that this summer--and indeed, my entire life--is not about me. This is not necessarily a new revelation, but my life has been so consumed by school for the past six years that I have not had--or I should confess and say probably more accurately, not made--time for truly reaching out and serving others.

And that is why I am here, right? To serve?

"Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others."
Philippians 2:3-4

And if I call myself a disciple of Christ, I'm supposed to be, through His grace and power, imitating Him, right?

"Therefore, be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God."
Ephesians 5:1-2

And that's why Jesus came, right? To serve? To love sacrificially?

Though He was God, He made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross."
Philippians 2:6-8

And now I need to backtrack a little bit: Last year, I read through the New Testament with our church, and as I read through the Gospels, I was struck by how many times it is mentioned that Jesus "had compassion" on the crowds or the individuals that surrounded Him. But what pierced me even more is the fact that His "compassion" always moved Him to action--meeting some spiritual and/or physical need that the crowd or person had (See Matthew 9:35-36, 15:32-38, 20:34, and various other echoes throughout the other three Gospels.).

So what does this mean for me? If I recognize compassion in the scriptures, feel it in my heart, and know "how to" do compassion in my head, but it never moves my hands and feet to action, then that recognition and knowledge is worthless...then I don't really "get" compassion because...

True compassion is love in action.

So now what? How do I live like I believe His Word and example?

I'm often the queen of good intentions in this area. I know the truth but fail to apply it. There is one word that has been resounding in my mind since all of this began swirling around in my heart a couple of months ago: INTENTIONALITYI've got to live intentionally for true compassion to take root and spill out into the lives of others.

God knows the slightly OCD, planner in me (can I get an "Amen!" for calendars and to-do-lists? :)), and I'm so grateful He is teaching me to let go and trust Him and His plan. BUT, I think He also knows that sometimes having a distinct plan is just what I need to get my hands and feet moving in sync with what He is doing in my heart. SO, I've taken the long route to get here (thanks for enduring my ramblings!), but here's the "plan" He laid on my heart a few days ago:

Every Week

Serve
Three People

1 family member

+

1 friend

+

1 stranger

=

{Compassion}
{Love in Action}

As I think about this charge the Lord has impressed upon me, I'm reminded of a post from a sweet friend where she quoted the following "Don't fail to do something just because you can't do everything." I certainly can't do everything, meet every need, but I can, and must, do something if I claim the name of Christ. Like they say, people may doubt what you say, but they will always believe what you do. So my words and actions must go hand in hand. Through Jesus I want to be an encouragement, finding little ways to minister to people's tangible needs as well as their spiritual.

Would you please chime in with suggestions (in the comments below) for ways to bless and serve those family members, friends, and strangers? I'd love to hear your ideas, big or small! I know sometimes its the seemingly small or even insignificant acts of service that can be the biggest blessing as people live Philippians 2:3-4...a note in the mail, a dinner you don't have to cook, a clean car, a night of babysitting, groceries, prayer, sharing scripture, a phone call...

Or maybe you might take this "1+1+1" challenge this summer, too?

Praying God will open my eyes to see the needs all around me and give me the sensitivity and boldness needed to act. Now to get to it! :)

Hello, again.

Well, I'm back...after the most crazy busy, stressful--but good--year of my life!

I know you all (I'm pretending I have a stellar, loyal, and large readership) have been anxiously awaiting my next riveting post! (Thank you for indulging this illusion delusion.) Since I have posted all of about three times since August of last year, I'm sure my all of about two readers have jumped ship by now, but that is just fine with me...I "blog" mainly for me...to have an "outlet" for my ever-running mind and as a sort of scrapbook-ish chronicle of our life. (Many thanks to my paternal Grandmama for passing down her journalling habit. Her mounds of spiral notebooks are my tapping out on the screen--but I admit, I do have a few notebooks, too.)

Now to return from that most necessary digression. So with my next several posts, I plan to try to catch myself up on this past year...to record some thoughts and lessons learned from my very first year of teaching full-time...and losing a granddaddy...and a small home reno (vaguely strongly reminiscent of Money Pit)...and finishing my M.A.Ed....and Paul finishing his B.S...and simply life in between it all.

While this summer is already filled with lots of stuff--baby showers and weddings and parties and curriculum training and vacation and books to read and projects to complete...--I'm praying to make the most of it. (Next post will share one way I'm praying for boldness and follow-through to make that happen.)

Happy, Happy Summer, Everyone!
(remember, I'm pretending to have a boatload of readers)
Hope your days are filled to the brim with all the best and then let that spill over in blessings to others!

Fixing Up the Place...

Ah, the joys of home ownership. And really, no sarcasm intended here. We spent most of last weekend doing some much need repairs and sprucing up around our house and yard. (Thanks to Paul's step-dad for coming over and helping us out for a couple of hours--Paul needed a little more muscle than I could offer for a few of the tasks!)  Took lots of elbow grease, but I really had fun working with the hubs and by the end of Saturday night, we were pretty proud of what we had accomplished.  (Even though we still have much to do!)

I attempted to document our progress...

Friday night we began pulling up every one of these pesky weeds...there is some real grass under there, I just know it.  I continued this drive-you-crazy task off & on all day Saturday. We finally got the whole front and side yards knocked out. And many thanks to our neighbors for loaning us this little contraption! I was definitely sore and sun-burned by about 8pm. Let's hope those little devils, er I mean weeds, find a new home.  Fat chance.

{rotten trim boards from the front corner of the house}

 {new boards up!}

 {I like a workin' man :)}

Our fence has been leaning (severely!) for a while...
maybe this post had something to do with it?

{new post set}

 {$2 find at hobby lobby! now i just need to dab a little brown paint on the screws}

{no "before shot" of this, but a friend's bulldog got a little bored one night and decided to have a little siding snack :) so we had to replace that board. now just need to paint it}

{picked up a hydrangea plant--my very favorite flower...}
{and a strawberry plant}
 {now I just need to re-pot them! can't wait for some sweet, homegrown strawberries!!}

Lots of projects still to go, but that's ok...what would be the fun in having everything done?! Enjoyed this weekend of work with my Paul and looking forward to this Memorial Day weekend with some good friends at the lake!

Snapshot: 2010

So I'm writing this at 4am…been wide awake since 2:45…good thing I don't have to work tomorrow because I'm *not* one of those people who can go on 4 hours of sleep! So while I was tossing and turning I got to thinking about the "2010 year in review" posts I've read the past few days on other blogs and thought that would be neat to have to look back on in a few years. My Grandmama Loftin is amazing at remembering when things happened…she can tell you the year, and many times the month, that just about anything happened—in her life, her family's life, her friends' lives, and history in general. She always says her Daddy was like that, too, and I think it also may be a result of her habit of journaling…I wish the gene had passed to me! So this post is my attempt to remember like Grandmama does. And one more thing…as I was lying there wide awake thinking about the year, the song "Blessed Be Your Name" by Matt Redman kept running through my mind. If you've never heard it, here are the lyrics. I think they are really powerful because they remind me that regardless of what happens in life—our 2010 had both much blessing and loss—God is still good and He is worthy to be praised.

Blessed Be Your Name
In the land that is plentiful
Where Your streams of abundance flow
Blessed be Your name

Blessed Be Your name
When I'm found in the desert place
Though I walk through the wilderness
Blessed Be Your name

Every blessing You pour out
I'll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
Still I will say

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name

Blessed be Your name
When the sun's shining down on me
When the world's 'all as it should be'
Blessed be Your name

Blessed be Your name
On the road marked with suffering
Though there's pain in the offering
Blessed be Your name

Every blessing You pour out
I'll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
Still I will say

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name

You give and take away
You give and take away
My heart will choose to say
Lord, blessed be Your name

SOLD!

You may remember [from a few posts back] the ol' 1962 Lincoln that we've been trying to sell...well, it SOLD! Finally. After much prayer, a few tears, and two Ebay flops, [why people would bid on something that they don't intend to or can't pay for is beyond me] the Los Angeles city attorney bought it yesterday to use as a "parade car"! [He knows Jennifer Aniston, by the way...I thought that was prettty cool :)] God is so faithful. Since I don't have a full time job right now, this sale is a huge blessing and weight lifted from a pretty really tight budget lately.  He blessed us with a good profit, and we are so thankful to have a done deal...and be on our way to the BEACH! We haven't been on a trip, even a weekend away, since our honeymoon. Looking forward to some chill time before we both hit the books again soon. We found a {super great deal} on a condo in Panama City, FL that we will be sharing with Kelly (Paul's sis) and her husband, Nick, and Taylor. Leaving this Saturday at 5am... SO excited.

Now, I'm off to mail the title to the LA City Hall and meet my love to go shop for some new sunglasses among other beach necessities!

bring on the books, sack lunches, & field trips

For those of you who don't already know, I will be returning to school in September at Union University (Germantown campus) to start working on my M.A.Ed. (Master of Arts in Education).  It only took taking a job at a photography studio and quitting after a miserable two weeks; writing gobs of cover letters and filling out gobs of applications for secretarial positions, marketing, nannying, editing, and everything in between; considering law school, traipsing around to every law office within 20 miles of here hoping for a "gopher" position, then shadowing a paralegal to make me realize that the plan I had had since I was five was the right plan: teach.  Not sure why I ever thought I would like to do something else better than teaching, but I'm glad I now have the "exploring other avenues" bug out of my system! Call me idealistic or whatever you will but I am excited about teaching because I feel like it is a job in which I can really make a difference--though it may be a small one--in the world.  Add to that the fact that I have always loved school [I was the kid who, even through college, delighted in organizing my notebooks and having all my homework completed.]  Again, call me what you will.  So needless to say, I am excited about starting back to school both as student and teacher.

I am scheduled to take the Praxis English grades 7-12 Content Knowledge exam on July 24--I've got to start brushing up on my grammar and high school literature! And although I won't yet be certified, I was told to go ahead and apply for positions for this fall, so that's what I'm doing and we're praying someone will be desperate!  The M.A.Ed. program will take me about two years to complete (classes will meet a couple nights a week), will satisfy all the requirements for certification, and will give me a "transitional license" with which I can teach until I finish the degree.

In the mean time, God has been so faithful to meet all of our needs during this last month without me working.  And just this past Sunday, I talked to a couple in our Connecting Point class (aka Sunday School) who owns a franchise of Computer Explorers about the possibility of working for them. [Another couple in our class, who are both teachers, work for them in the summer and suggested I talk with them.]  They are a company who works with schools to provide technology education to kids ages three and up.  I am supposed to meet with her next week and hopefully get started working a camp the week of June 21.  If I am not offered an English teacher position for the fall, then I can most likely continue working for them throughout the school year.  [This is just one of the tangible blessings that is coming out of the relationships we are building with the people in our class.  I'm so thankful the Lord placed us at Central and in that class--He is really growing us through it.]

So, a teacher I will be.  I've got His peace about this [not so new] direction, and I'm excited.

cold.snow.ice. but enjoying being "stuck" at home.

It started coming down early yesterday (Fri.) morning--huge flakes. It would snow for a while, then sleet, then rain. Thankfully, neither of us had to work. Paul got a good bit of homework done, but, for the most part, we had a pretty lazy day. This morning it looked like it had snowed a bit more, and everything was frozen solid. Some people have lost power; thankfully, we have not. We are watching State play LSU right now, and, out the window, I can see the icicles beginning to drip, so maybe we are beginning the meltdown... It's always fun to have a snow day, or two.

Getting ready to do a little much needed cleaning and then cook Italian Meatloaf for dinner (another covert try, so keep your fingers crossed.)

all things new...

January--a month that brings lots of things NEW...of course, it brings a brand new year [and this year, a brand new decade!] and the ever infamous "New Year's Resolutions." No official new resolutions for me this year, but 2010 has brought a few new changes in our life so far:

1. this new blog: I've been debating creating one for a while now--thanks to Jenna & Emily for the final inspiration! Don't hold your breath for anything spectacular, but i just want this to be a place to share what is going on with us/random projects/thoughts/etc.

2. new j-o-b: I started my first "real" job this week working as a tutor at the Bowie Reading & Learning Center in Memphis. I'm only part-time and this is most likely a temporary position--still looking for something full-time and something I'm really excited about waking up for--call me a dreamer, but I'm determined! :) In addition, I still independently tutor the 3 students i have had since December via an ad I placed on craigslist.

3. new school for paul: Today, he hit the books again in pursuit of his bachelor's! Online classes through Fort Hays State University (in Kansas). Goal is to finish in 1.5-2 years. will have a B.S. in Technology Leadership. I am SO proud he is taking this next step, and I think he is excited about it, too.

4. new Bible study: Tonight we are starting a study at Central on developing a deeper relationship with our Savior through learning to have a meaningful (i.e. UN-hurried), consistent (i.e. Daily) intimate time with Him. SO excited we are doing this together and looking forward to what God is going to teach us. Just talked to a friend this afternoon who said, "we can't grow closer to the Lord and stay the same." so true! How thankful I am for this promise: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!" 2 Corinthians 5:17

so, there it is--for better or worse--my first blog post :)
